The story of Yayasan Unisba
More than 60 years ago, the idea of establishing an Islamic higher-education institution began to emerge in Bandung. A number of Islamic figures and scholars in West Java wanted to create an institution that could educate future leaders and contribute to the development of the Muslim community.
In 1958, the idea became reality.
On November 15, 1958, the Perguruan Islam Tinggi (PIT) was established in Bandung under the Yayasan Pendidikan Islam (YPI). At the beginning, its activities were held at Gedung Muslimin on Jalan Palasari, Bandung, before eventually moving to another location.
The institution continued to develop over the following years.
In 1967, Perguruan Islam Tinggi evolved into what would become known as Universitas Islam Bandung (Unisba). Several years later, in 1972, the university's activities were centered at Jalan Tamansari No. 1, Bandung, which became closely associated with Unisba's identity.
The organization behind the university also continued to evolve.
On April 22, 2007, the former Yayasan Pendidikan Islam officially changed its name to Yayasan Universitas Islam Bandung (Yayasan Unisba) through Notarial Deed No. 07.
Today, Yayasan Unisba serves as the foundation that oversees Universitas Islam Bandung.
What started in 1958 as a small Islamic higher-education institution in Bandung eventually grew into the institution known today as Unisba.
More than six decades later, the name, organization, and campus have changed and expanded — but the original idea remains connected to the same purpose: building higher education based on Islamic values.
